What to Do Before Calling an Appliance Repair Technician

When an appliance breaks down, it is tempting to call for help right away. That is usually the right move, but a few minutes of prep beforehand can make the whole process faster and give you a more accurate answer, whether you are talking to us on the phone or waiting for a technician to arrive.

Write Down What the Appliance Is Actually Doing

Before you call, take a moment to note the specific symptom. Saying an appliance is “broken” does not tell a technician much. Is it making a noise, refusing to turn on, not heating, or leaking somewhere? When did you first notice it, and has it gotten worse? Does the problem happen every time you use the appliance, or only sometimes? These details might seem small, but they often point directly to the cause and can save real time during diagnosis.

Find the Model Number If You Can

Most appliances have a model number printed on a sticker somewhere on the unit. On refrigerators, it is often inside the door frame or under a crisper drawer. On washers and dryers, check the door frame or the back panel. Having this number ready when you call helps us understand exactly what we are working with, and it means we can bring the right tools and likely parts on the first visit. If you cannot find it quickly, do not worry. We can locate it once we are there.

Do a Few Basic Safety Checks

Before assuming the worst, it is worth ruling out the obvious. Confirm the appliance is actually plugged in and that the outlet has power, since a tripped outlet or a loose plug is an easy fix. Check your breaker panel to see if a breaker has tripped. If the appliance runs on gas, confirm the gas supply is turned on. None of this takes more than a minute or two, and sometimes it solves the problem outright. If not, it at least rules out the simplest explanations before a technician even arrives.
