Signs Your Garbage Disposal Needs Repair
Referral service: we connect you with independent, local appliance technicians.
A garbage disposal is one of those appliances people ignore right up until it stops working entirely, mostly because the early warning signs are easy to write off as normal. A few of them are actually worth paying attention to before that happens.
Humming Without Spinning Usually Means a Jam
If you flip the switch and hear a hum but the blades aren’t actually turning, something is physically stuck inside, often a piece of bone, fruit pit, or utensil that slipped in unnoticed. Many disposals have a manual reset button on the bottom, and some come with a hex key wrench for manually freeing a jam. If neither clears it, that’s when it’s worth having someone look at what’s actually stuck.
Frequent Resets Point to Overheating
Disposals have a built-in overheat protection that trips and shuts the unit down if the motor is working too hard for too long. If you’re hitting that reset button regularly, the motor is struggling with something, whether that’s a partial jam, worn bearings, or just age catching up with it. Resetting it repeatedly without addressing the cause tends to shorten the motor’s life.
Leaking From the Bottom Means a Seal Has Failed
Water pooling underneath the disposal, especially right after running it, usually points to a worn seal inside the unit rather than something with the plumbing connections. This one’s worth checking sooner rather than later, since water sitting under a disposal for a while can lead to cabinet damage that’s a bigger headache than the disposal itself.
Grinding or Rattling That Wasn’t There Before
A little metallic sound occasionally is normal. A persistent grinding or rattling noise that’s new usually means something loose or worn inside is hitting the impeller as it spins. It’s worth turning the disposal off and checking with a flashlight, without putting your hand inside, for anything obviously wrong before running it again.
A Smell That Cleaning Doesn’t Fix
Running ice cubes or a citrus peel through the disposal usually clears normal odor buildup. If the smell keeps coming back despite regular cleaning, there may be food debris packed somewhere the blades and water flow aren’t reaching, which sometimes means a deeper cleaning or inspection than a homeowner can easily do themselves.
When Repair Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore
Garbage disposals are relatively inexpensive compared to most major appliances, so once a unit has needed more than one repair, or it’s old and the motor is clearly wearing out, replacement often makes more practical sense than continuing to fix it. See our full repair or replace guide for how we generally weigh that.
Most of these signs are worth acting on before the disposal stops working completely, since catching a jam or a worn seal early is usually a simpler fix than dealing with a dead motor. See our full Garbage Disposal Repair page, or our appliance problems guide for more.
