Why Does My Dishwasher Leave Dishes Cloudy?

Hard Water Is the Most Common Cause
In most cases, cloudy dishes are not actually a dishwasher problem at all. They are a water problem. Hard water contains minerals that leave a thin film on glassware and dishes as they dry, and that film is what creates the cloudy or filmy appearance. How to Tell If It Is Hard Water Versus Something Else
A simple test helps narrow it down. Soak a cloudy glass in white vinegar for a few minutes. If the cloudiness mostly disappears, it is almost certainly mineral buildup from hard water rather than a mechanical issue with the dishwasher itself.
Rinse Aid Makes a Real Difference
Rinse aid is designed specifically to help water sheet off dishes instead of forming droplets that dry into spots and film. If your dishwasher has not been using rinse aid, or the reservoir has been running empty, that alone can explain a lot of the cloudiness you are seeing.
A Clogged Filter or Spray Arm Can Contribute Too
If the dishwasher’s filter is dirty or a spray arm is partially blocked, dishes may not get properly rinsed during the cycle, which can leave behind residue that looks similar to hard water film. Checking and cleaning the filter periodically is simple maintenance that helps with more than just cloudiness.
When It Is Actually a Mechanical Problem
